Summary

North American Broadband Service Providers (BSPs) added .7 million net subscribers in the second quarter of 2009, representing a 1% rate growth compared to Q1'09.

US Broadband service providers added only 700,000 residential broadband subscribers in the second quarter of 2009, making it the weakest “net adds” period in recent memory. The second quarter is historically the weakest one for US service providers, due in part to seasonal service terminations. The Telcos fared slightly better this year than in the same quarter last year, and handily outpaced the cable companies in net new subscriptions.
Comcast continues to hold the dominant position, reporting 15.3 million subscriptions at the end of the second quarter, despite having its worst quarter in terms of new subs in over two years. AT&T places second, attributable to strong growth in its U-verse offering; Verizon ranks third, owing much of its growth to FiOS.

Despite the fairly weak quarter, AT&T and Verizon's respective FTTx offerings should continue to stimulate broadband growth to hit the projected 75 million by the end of the year.
