The French market is among the most competitive in the world, with a multitude of players competing for subscribers. What makes the market unique is that a challenger, Iliad, has in many ways established the rules of engagement—a move that his has put competitors France Télécom and Neuf Cégétel on the defensive. As the market becomes increasingly commoditized, operators are left with no choice but to differentiate. Simple repackaging and bundling, however, will not suffice. What is called for is true innovation. With consolidation inevitable, only those operators able to successfully innovate will achieve leadership positions in the market.
